Three?Dimensional Physical Modelling of Tsunamis Generated by Partially Submerged Landslides

چکیده

Massive landslides can generate large tsunamis and endanger human lives properties. While a number of laboratory experiments on either subaerial or submarine landslide-tsunamis have been conducted, few studies focused partially submerged events. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics develop predictive equation that estimate their heights through three-dimensional used 114 different conditions. experimental results showed that, while waves generated in landslide sliding direction had around 1.7 times higher amplitude than those propagating laterally near-field region, wave period, celerity, wavelength did not alter significantly according propagation angles. effects dispersion were also shown be significant during process. Such consistent with reported existing tsunami conducted by other researchers. Based data set obtained, authors derived which was confirmed able an error ±30%, thus helpful for rapid hazard assessment. developed indicated volume could more twice impact height landslide-tsunami parameters. size case landslide-tsunami, though attenuation process similar both types.

Seismically generated tsunamis.

People around the world know more about tsunamis than they did 10 years ago, primarily because of two events: a tsunami on 26 December 2004 that killed more than 200,000 people around the shores of the Indian Ocean; and an earthquake and tsunami off the coast of Japan on 11 March 2011 that killed nearly 15,000 more and triggered a nuclear accident, with consequences that are still unfolding. Th...

Numerical modelling of induced rip currents by discontinuous submerged breakwaters

Submerged breakwaters are one of the shore protective structures. Any discontinuity in these breakwaters causes changes on current parameters including speed and water surface profile. In this paper, discontinuous submerged breakwaters were modelled to investigate the changes in the wave and flow pattern. To investigate the phenomenon, three models including a shore with constant slope, a shore ...

Multi-level Monte Carlo finite volume method for shallow water equations with uncertain parameters applied to landslides-generated tsunamis

Two layer Savage-Hutter type shallow water PDEs model flows such as tsunamis generated by rockslides. On account of heterogeneities in the composition of the granular matter, these models contain uncertain parameters like the ratio of densities of layers, Coulomb and interlayer friction. These parameters are modeled statistically and quantifying the resulting solution uncertainty (UQ) is a cruc...
